you’re driving down the street, coming up to a railroad crossing…
as you go over the railroad tracks you place your fingertip on the top of the screw in your car door handle, take a deep breath, hold it and make a wish.
if you see a red truck before you have to breathe again, your wish will come true…
jocelyn’s been doing this for years. even now, at eighteen, when we’re coming up to the tracks i can see her [without even turning my head] move her hand surreptitiously towards the car door and quietly take a deep breath. and i, of course, point out any red trucks i might see 
aaaah, the magic of wishing.
maybe magic DOES happen, to those who believe…
