HELMS BAKERY TRUCKS WERE THE BEST. HANDS DOWN!..WHEN HE CAME DOWN MY STREET IN POMONA IT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE DAY. WHEN HE OPENED THOSE BACK DOORS AND PULLED OUT THE LONG WOODEN DRAWERS, AND ALL I SAW WERE DONUTS…YEEE HAAA
Thank you for the great pic! Would you happen to have any pics of the Helms doughnut truck? I believe it was a suburban in the late 60’s early 70’s? This is a fond memory for my husband and myself.
Thank you for your help…
Tammy
I remember the Helms trucks well! They used to come through my grandma’s neighborhood and just the sound of the horn was enough to make my mouth water! And when he opened the back of that truck, all I could smell was the molasses in those heavenly oatmeal cookies!!
To this day, the smell of molasses takes me back to a quieter, easier time and brings to mind that little yellow and blue truck!
If anyone has found a decent photo of those Chevy Suburban type Helms trucks I would love to see one as well. I remeber those long-long drawers filled with doughnuts very well. I lived in Los Alamitos, Ca in 1958-1960 and that was when I saw them.
In reply to Barry, I am looking very hard for a photo. My grandpa drove one of those Chevy panel trucks with the drawers and the horn. Sometimes he would take me on his route and let me work the horn.
If you find a pic, please let me know.
